• We are committed to using mediation and other methods of non-court dispute resolution (NCDR) and alternative dispute resolution (ADR), where possible, to resolve issues arising on separation and divorce.

We understand that ending a relationship can be complex, but that many couples want to avoid the time and expense of using the courts. The options described below can help couples reach agreement without the stresses of going to court.

These methods can also help families to maintain respectful, cooperative relationships for the future.

    Family mediation

In mediation the mediator will assist the separating couple to have a constructive dialogue about the arrangements they wish to make whether those be financial or with regard to children. Mediators do not give advice but will provide the information the couple need to make informed decisions about their futures  .

Our mediators are trained to assist couples to resolve issues such as:

    • Practicalities of separation, including where each of you will live, how you will tell the children and how bills will be paid
    • Arrangements for children, for example, when each of you will spend time with them
    • Financial arrangements including for any businesses and pensions and
    • Any other issues which may raise including arrangements in the short term

It can help couples who want to keep control of the arrangements they are making and simply need a assistance to reach agreement.

It can be particularly beneficial where children are involved, as it can help to preserve a cooperative relationship between parents.

As part of our initial discussion with you, we will advise you about the suitability of mediation for your circumstances.

    Collaborative law

The collaborative law process is a simple and straightforward method of dispute resolution, similar to mediation but supported by the couples appointed solicitors who are specially trained.

Almost all of the activity takes place around a table with you, your partner and your respective lawyers.

This allows you to have full and open discussions about your options without either party being at a disadvantage.

The process is based on both parties and both lawyers agreeing in writing not to go to court. This is confirmed in a formal agreement, which everyone signs at the first meeting.

This agreement aims to help you deal with each other fairly and respectfully as you search for the solutions that will work best for everyone. The lawyers will work together to help you explore your options.

Our collaborative lawyers are trained to focus on your family as the priority. We’ll ensure that the best interests of everybody involved are at the heart of the process.
