Funding options for employees
If you are an employee looking for legal advice, you may find that there are options available to you to help fund your legal costs, in full or in part.
Legal expenses insurance
Many people are unaware that they are covered for legal expenses through their insurance policies such as household or motor insurance. These insurance policies often cover legal expenses relating to employment law matters, such as bringing a claim in an employment tribunal. Policies can vary, however you may find that you do not need to pay any legal costs and are able to keep 100% of any damages awarded.
To find out if you are covered, we suggest you get in touch with your insurance providers and ask whether you have legal expenses cover for employment law claims.
Trade union funding
If your company operates a trade union, there may be a chance that they will provide legal advice and support to their employee members, often for no charge, depending on the nature of the dispute.
To find out if you are covered, we suggest you get in touch with your trade union representative.
Equality and Human Rights Commission
Funding for discrimination claims may be available from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in limited circumstances. The EHRC has its own funding criteria which vary from time to time. Cases will usually need to set a precedent for the greater benefit of particular classes of employees before they can attract support from the EHRC.
Take a look at the Equality and Human Rights Commission webpage to find out more.
